'SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE'

120 minutes of pure Bollywood splendour!  A young boy gets on to the Indian version of  'Who wants to be a Millionaire' and wins the top 20,000,000 rupee prize, but he's suspected of cheating and is taken to the police station and subjected to beatings to try and make him confess how he did it...in the end, the chief of police has to concede that his upbringing in the slums of Mumbai has given him all the experience and knowledge he needed to answer the questions correctly.

The film is so full of warmth and humanity and looks so positively at the bright side of tragedy that it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and humour and forget that the kind of miserable childhood depicted is actually real and still going on in many countries where children are still being maimed and blinded so that they can be sent out on the streets as beggars.  The children that play the young Jamel, his brother and his childhood sweetheart are perfect, you just want to take them home and love them.

There are bizarre slips from Indian to English and back again that give the film even more authenticity, the message being that hard earned street knowledge can be as valuable as a traditional education .  A compelling film full of the colour, people and places of India, and one not to miss.
